Can a consumer find the right advisor on an independent wealth manager’s website?
We walked every one of these 83 by hand and tested each
against the same six things. Here is what we found, firm by firm.
What this group does, and does not, let a visitor do
83 RIAs and independent wealth managers audited here pass 3.72 of the six on average.
It is ahead of the study on see a real person at all (98% against 76%) and narrow by what you need (40% against 29%).
2 of the 83 reach nobody at all — no named advisor appears at any depth, so there is nothing for a visitor to choose between.
28 hand a visitor a named advisor they were given no way to choose.
7 pass all six. 2 pass none.
Can you see a real person at all?
98%
81 of 83

40%
33 of 83
33 of 83 offer a control for specialty, credentials, or how an advisor is paid. On the other 50, location is the only thing a visitor can narrow by, or there is nothing to narrow by at all.

23%
19 of 83

Can you reach them yourself?
61%
51 of 83

Can a machine find them?
87%
72 of 83
72 of 83 put their advisors in the served bytes, where a crawler or an answer engine can read them. On the other 11, the advisors are invisible to machines.

The only control-shaped element on the locator is a four-item nav bar rendered as buttons: 'Partners' | 'Advisors & Consultants' | 'Tax' | 'Team' (class 'team-section-nav__button').
No <select> of any kind exists on the page (document.querySelectorAll('select').length === 0).
No iframe exists (checked per addendum 5 / Wealthtender): document.querySelectorAll('iframe') returns an empty list on the rendered page.
No custom combobox exists: [role=listbox], [role=combobox] and [aria-haspopup] all return zero elements.
No text input of any kind exists on the locator (zero <input> elements).
Advisor cards carry exactly two attributes — 'class' and 'href'. There is no data-* taxonomy of the Valley National / Zions kind to drive even if a control were bolted on.
1 further entry is held back: it carries our own adjudication rather than the page’s own labels.

Nicola Wealth's own statement of why, verbatim from /meet-with-us: 'We view the client experience as an ensemble effort. It requires a collaborative, team-based approach with multiple advisors and company-wide support — not a siloed model with individual service groups.' 'Office Location' — 18 options in a two-level hierarchy: Florida (14) [Palm Beach (6), Tampa (8)] | Georgia (123) [Alpharetta (14), Atlanta (HQ) (106), Augusta (2), Sandy Springs (1)] | Maryland (37) [Columbia (8), Towson (36)] | North Carolina (4) [Charlotte (4)] | South Carolina (2) [Columbia (1), Greenville (1)] | Tennessee (1) [Nashville (1)].
'College/University' — 119 named institutions with counts, from American University (1) to the rest. This is an unusual facet and is recorded but credited to nothing: an alma mater is neither a specialty, a credential, a fee model, a language, an identity nor a life event.

Narrow by what you need Add one professional-need control — specialty, credentials, or how the advisor is paid. Location does not count.
Reach them yourself Put that advisor’s own phone or email on their profile, or let the consumer book into their calendar, before asking for anything.
Keep your details until you choose Let the consumer see and choose an advisor before the form, not after it.
Of the 73 RIAs and independent wealth managers we audited in US, 30 let a consumer narrow by what they need. You are not one of them.
